3. Underwater weighing: This is the golden standard of fat assessment that is most accurate.

Whatever the test, the end results give you the body fat percentage. The recommended levels of healthy body fat are;

Males’ body fat percentage

1. Young adults (aged 20-39) 8% to 22%

2. Middle aged (40-59 years) 10% to 25%

3. Elderly (60-79 years) 13% to 24%

Females’ body fat percentage

Young adult (20- 39 years) 20% to 35%

Middle aged (40-59 years) 25% to 38%

Elderly (60-79 years) 25% to 35%

When an individual goes above these limits, he/she will be in the overweight or obese categories. However, having a lower level than these fat percentage limits is considered malnutrition. For men, the average body fat percentage is 13% while in women it is 28%. This is considered healthy body fat and going above or below these limits increase the risk of health problems.
